Insider’s Guide to Middlebury: The Center for Community Engagement

The CCE supports students wanting to engage in local, national, or global communities in thoughtful and meaningful ways for the public good.

CCE Initiatives: An Overview

  • The CCE’s work takes on many forms, including curricular opportunities like the Privilege & Poverty Academic cluster and Community-Connected Learning course, student-led organizations that engage with local community partners, summer opportunities in Middlebury and beyond, and grants to develop your own community-based project.
  • Privilege and Poverty Academic Cluster: This academic cluster combines coursework and experiential learning to critically examine the causes and consequences of economic inequality. Choose from a variety of courses across disciplines and put your learning into action through a summer internship. Sign up to receive the Privilege & Poverty emails to stay up-to-date!
  • Language in Motion: Language in Motion (LiM) is an educational collaboration that connects Middlebury’s international, study abroad, and upper-level language students with Addison County K-12 teachers, students, and classrooms. With support and training, Middlebury College students work with teachers to prepare and deliver lessons that promote global awareness, intercultural competence, and world language acquisition.
  • Community-Connected Learning course: In this course, you will pair your community engagement with academic coursework and reflection. You’ll get to develop social-issue knowledge, collaborative skills, and civic identity that complements your new or existing community partnership experiences! This is a great opportunity to get engaged in community in a supportive learning environment.
  • Middlebury Alternative Breaks (MAlt): MAlt is Middlebury’s alternative break program. Malt engages Middlebury students with communities across the nation and the globe to share a meaningful experience, provide service where service is needed, and learn about the systems that shape community realities around the world.
  • Community Engagement Organizations (CEO): The CCE advises and supports 21 student-led Community Engagement Organizations that engage communities in a variety of ways, including poverty alleviation, youth mentoring and education, migrant justice, and civic engagement. Each CEO has its own application process and timeline. Reach out to the organization leaders or advisors directly to learn more.
  • Grants and Funding Opportunities: The CCE offers four types of funding for projects and work involving community action. Click here for more details on how and when to apply!
  • Events and opportunities: Keep an eye out for events hosted by our Community Engagement opportunities! Every spring, we host Public Service Leadership Awards to recognize students for their service and leadership in public and community affairs. We can also help students make connections with nonprofits and other volunteer opportunities.
