- The emergency line is 802-443-5911. Please note, 911 should always be called first for life threatening emergencies.
- Public Safety offers a wide variety of non-emergent services including bike lock removal, lost and found, and lock out services. Department members regularly monitor campus both on foot and in cruisers. They are trained in CPR and first aid. The team at Public Safety is unsworn and unarmed. They do not have the authority to make arrests but do work cooperatively with local law-enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of the campus community. In the event of a confirmed emergency or dangerous situation on campus, the department can utilize the College’s Emergency Notification System (ENS) to alert the affected area or campus population. There are various methods used to send an emergency notification. They include:
- RAVE messaging through various points of contact listed in BannerWeb. This includes email, text messaging, and phone calls. Therefore, it’s important that students confirm the information in BannerWeb is current. Emails can also be sent through the Public Safety general email account (publicsafety@middlebury.edu) to all students, all faculty, and/or all staff through their Middlebury College email addresses. Emails sent through RAVE will come from middlebury@getrave.com and all messages sent through RAVE will identify as “Midd Alerts.” RAVE messaging through various pints of contact listed in BannerWeb. - MiddAlert is a high-availability website, hosted by Google that authorized administrators can use to post current information about emergencies. Updates will typically come from departments outside of Public Safety, but it’s important to note that this can be a resource as well.
- Go/publicsafety/ is an excellent resource for educating the community on what to do or who to call in the event of an emergency.
- If you observe worrisome behavior or suspect that a potentially dangerous situation is developing, please report your concerns to Public Safety. Our primary goal is to keep our community safe. Your report can assist us in negating an escalating situation and/or getting an individual the services they need.
- You must register your car. The website contains detailed information about parking permits, parking lots, potential fines, and the winter parking ban through the town.
- You must also register your bike. Bike registration is free and can assist us in identifying your bike should it become lost or stolen.
- You will need a Midd Card for dining halls as well as access to residential halls and certain academic buildings. If lost, you must order a new one online and pick it up in lower Proctor. Public Safety can provide you with a temporary card in the meantime.
- Additional information on Middlebury’s safety and security programs, policies and procedures, crime statistics, fire-related statistics regarding student residential facilities, and other fire safety–related information can be found in the College’s Annual Security and Fire Safety Report.
- The Department of Public Safety can assist with medical transports on a case-by-case basis. The safety and wellbeing of our campus community is our number one priority. As such, we try to remain on campus as much as possible so that we are able to respond in the event of an emergency. Therefore, we ask that students with scheduled medical appointments utilize public transportation or explore the possibility of getting a ride from a trusted friend prior to reaching out to Public Safety.
